About

Welcome to Mary Sue & Susan!

Welcome to marysueandsusan.com, where recipes come with stories, the kitchen always feels a little lively, and cooking is rarely as serious as the fancy cookbooks make it sound.

This is the kind of place where a simple dinner can turn into a new favorite, a dessert can become the reason everyone suddenly “just happened to stop by,” and a recipe can begin with a solid plan but end with someone saying, “Well… we added extra butter, and honestly, it was the right choice.”

At Mary Sue & Susan, cooking is about more than getting food on the table. It’s about the little moments in between – the taste test straight from the spoon, the flour on the counter you pretend not to see, the last-minute ingredient swap that somehow saves the day, and the laughter that tends to show up when things do not go exactly as planned.

So come hungry, come curious, and come ready for recipes made with heart, humor, and maybe one extra handful of cheese.

How Mary Sue & Susan Came to Life

Some websites begin with a business plan.

This one began with two women, one kitchen, a pile of recipe notes, and a very strong opinion about how long pasta should actually cook.

Mary Sue and Susan had always loved food, but they loved it in completely different ways.

Mary Sue cooked like she was following a feeling, not a formula. She believed measuring spoons were helpful, but not always necessary. She liked a pinch of this, a splash of that, and the occasional, “I know this sounds strange, but trust me.” Her recipes often started with one idea and somehow ended in something even better – mostly because she was not afraid to take a few delicious detours.

Susan, meanwhile, approached the kitchen like a woman who respected a plan. She liked order, timing, and the calm satisfaction of knowing exactly where the spatula was. She believed recipes should work the first time, directions should make sense, and no one should have to guess what “cook until done” is supposed to mean.

That mix became the heart of Mary Sue & Susan.

Meet Mary Sue & Susan

We are two women with different kitchen habits, different instincts, and different opinions about how many bowls one recipe should reasonably require.

Together, we create recipes that feel creative but grounded, exciting but doable, and flavorful without becoming complicated. Our differences are not the problem; they are the secret ingredient.

Mary Sue

Mary Sue – The Big-Idea Cook with a Brave Spoon

Mary Sue is the one who believes every recipe has room for a little surprise.

She cooks with curiosity, confidence, and the kind of energy that makes you think, “This could go wonderfully… or become a very memorable story.” Thankfully, it is usually the first one.

She loves taking familiar recipes and giving them a fresh twist, adding bold flavors where people least expect them, and making dishes feel exciting without making them feel fussy. Mary Sue has a gift for turning ordinary ingredients into something that tastes like you put in far more effort than you actually did, which is, frankly, one of life’s better talents.

Her kitchen style is lively and fearless. She believes that food should feel joyful, that recipes should leave room for personality, and that some of the best cooking moments begin with the sentence, “I had an idea.”

About Susan

Mission and Values

At marysueandsusan.com, our mission is simple: to make cooking feel more joyful, more approachable, and much more like something you actually want to do at the end of a long day.

We believe recipes should not feel cold, confusing, or written for people who keep truffle oil in a crystal bottle by the stove. They should feel warm, helpful, and built for real life, like for weeknights, lazy weekends, family tables, last-minute cravings, and those moments when you open the fridge and hope inspiration is hiding behind the mustard.

Cooking Should Feel Like a Good Time

Food matters, but so does the feeling around it.

We believe cooking should be enjoyable, not stressful. Yes, dinner has to get made. Yes, dishes are real. But somewhere in the middle of all that, there should still be room for delight. A good recipe should make your life easier, not make you question every decision that led you into the kitchen.

Comfort and Creativity Belong Together

Our recipes often begin with something comforting and then get a little extra personality from there. Maybe it is a brighter flavor, a smarter shortcut, a playful twist, or a small detail that makes the dish feel new again. We are big believers in food that surprises you just enough to stay interesting.

Good Food Brings People Closer

Some of the best conversations happen over food. Some of the best memories do too.

That is why we care about recipes that invite people in. Whether it is a weeknight dinner, a casual dessert, or a dish that becomes part of someone’s family routine, we love the idea that food can create connection in small, meaningful ways.

You Do Not Need to Be Fancy to Cook Well

You do not need expensive gadgets, rare ingredients, or a dramatic soundtrack to make something delicious. You need a recipe that makes sense, ingredients you can work with, and a little confidence. We are here to help with all three.

Why You Can Trust Mary Sue & Susan

We know the internet is full of recipes that look beautiful in photos and then somehow leave you standing in your kitchen wondering if you missed a page.

That is not what we do here.

At Mary Sue & Susan, trust matters just as much as flavor. We want the recipes you find here to feel dependable, useful, and genuinely worth your time.

We Test Like We Mean It

Every recipe we share goes through real kitchen testing, not just one quick success under perfect conditions.

We make it, adjust it, remake it, talk about it, taste it again, and occasionally argue over whether it needs more garlic. If something feels unclear, too fussy, or just not good enough, it does not make the cut.

We Keep It Honest

If a shortcut works, we love it.

If a step matters, we say so.

If a dish is messy but worth it, we will be the first to admit it.

We are not here to make cooking look perfect. We are here to make it feel possible and enjoyable. Sometimes that means telling the glamorous truth, and sometimes it means saying, “Yes, your hands will get sticky, but stay with us.”

We Write Like Real People Cook

That means instructions that are clear, honest, and actually readable. We do not believe in vague mystery phrases or steps that skip the important part. If you are following one of our recipes, we want you to feel like someone thoughtful is guiding you through it, not sending you into battle with a mixing bowl and false confidence.
