Description

Chicken Cordon Bleu brings together golden chicken, melted Swiss cheese, and savory ham in a crispy, delightful package that sparks excitement at your dinner table. Tender chicken breasts stuffed with rich ingredients create a classic dish that feels like a warm hug from your favorite kitchen memories.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices deli ham

Coating and Breading:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1½ cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Sauce and Seasoning:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1¼ cups whole milk
  • 1½ tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • ⅓ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Peanut or vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Protect chicken breasts between plastic wrap and pound to ¼-inch thickness. Sprinkle each side with ¼ tsp salt, ⅛ tsp pepper, ¼ tsp garlic powder, and ¼ tsp onion powder.
  2. Position 2 Swiss cheese slices and 2 ham slices across each flattened chicken breast. Roll tightly, securing each bundle with 3-4 toothpicks.
  3. Spread 1 cup sifted flour on flat surface. Dunk each chicken roll in 2 beaten eggs, then roll completely in 1½ cups panko breadcrumbs. Press crumbs firmly to create dense, even coating.
  4. Heat peanut oil to 350°F in deep skillet, filling pan with 1 inch oil. Carefully lower chicken rolls into hot oil. Fry 4-5 minutes per side until exterior reaches golden brown and internal temperature hits 165°F.
  5. Transfer fried chicken to paper towel-lined plate. Allow excess oil to drain for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Melt 2 tbsp butter in saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 minced garlic cloves, cooking 30 seconds until fragrant.
  7. Sprinkle 2 tbsp flour into butter, whisking constantly for 1 minute. Gradually pour 1¼ cups milk, stirring until sauce thickens.
  8. Blend 1½ tbsp Dijon mustard and ⅓ cup Parmesan into sauce. Season with pinch of salt and pepper.
  9. Remove toothpicks from chicken. Slice rolls diagonally and drizzle with warm Parmesan sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Pound chicken breasts evenly to ensure uniform cooking and prevent dry spots in your Chicken Cordon Bleu.
  • Use toothpicks strategically when rolling to keep cheese and ham securely inside during frying.
  • Choose a neutral high-heat oil like peanut or vegetable for the crispiest exterior without overpowering flavors.
  • For a lighter version, consider baking the breaded rolls at 375°F for 25-30 minutes instead of deep frying, which reduces overall oil content.
