Description

Hamburger steaks bring pure comfort straight to your dinner table, packed with savory goodness that feels like a warm hug from grandma’s kitchen. Tender beef patties smothered in rich gravy make weeknight meals simple and satisfying for hungry families craving home-style cooking.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Protein:

  • 1 lb ground beef

Binding and Flavor Enhancers:

  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper

Cooking Liquid and Aromatics:

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 lb ground beef, ½ cup bread crumbs, ¼ cup finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 tsp salt, and ½ tsp pepper in a large mixing bowl. Blend ingredients thoroughly with your hands until evenly mixed.
  2. Shape the meat mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, each about ½ inch thick. Press center of each patty slightly to prevent bulging during cooking.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat (375°F). Carefully place patties into the hot skillet.
  4. Cook patties for 5 minutes on first side until golden brown. Flip and cook additional 5 minutes on opposite side.
  5. Transfer cooked patties to a clean plate. Keep warm while preparing sauce.
  6. Add 1 cup sliced onions to the same skillet. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until onions become translucent and soft.
  7. Pour 1 cup beef broth into skillet. Scrape bottom of pan to release browned bits.
  8. Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Simmer for 10 minutes at low heat (325°F), allowing patties to absorb sauce flavors.
  9. Plate hamburger steaks, spooning onion gravy directly over top before serving hot.

Notes

  • Always choose ground beef with a bit of fat content for juicier hamburger steaks.
  • Press patties gently when forming to avoid compacting the meat too tightly, which can make them tough.
  • Season your breadcrumbs with a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs for extra flavor depth.
  • Let the patties rest for a few minutes after cooking to help them retain their juices and stay tender.
