Ingredients
Scale
Main Protein:
- 1 lb ground beef
Binding and Flavor Enhancers:
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Cooking Liquid and Aromatics:
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Combine 1 lb ground beef, ½ cup bread crumbs, ¼ cup finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 tsp salt, and ½ tsp pepper in a large mixing bowl. Blend ingredients thoroughly with your hands until evenly mixed.
- Shape the meat mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, each about ½ inch thick. Press center of each patty slightly to prevent bulging during cooking.
- Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat (375°F). Carefully place patties into the hot skillet.
- Cook patties for 5 minutes on first side until golden brown. Flip and cook additional 5 minutes on opposite side.
- Transfer cooked patties to a clean plate. Keep warm while preparing sauce.
- Add 1 cup sliced onions to the same skillet. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until onions become translucent and soft.
- Pour 1 cup beef broth into skillet. Scrape bottom of pan to release browned bits.
- Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Simmer for 10 minutes at low heat (325°F), allowing patties to absorb sauce flavors.
- Plate hamburger steaks, spooning onion gravy directly over top before serving hot.
Notes
- Always choose ground beef with a bit of fat content for juicier hamburger steaks.
- Press patties gently when forming to avoid compacting the meat too tightly, which can make them tough.
- Season your breadcrumbs with a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs for extra flavor depth.
- Let the patties rest for a few minutes after cooking to help them retain their juices and stay tender.
