Description

Hamburger Steaks with Onion Mushroom Gravy brings comfort straight from Grandma’s kitchen to your dinner table. Tender beef patties smothered in rich, savory gravy make this classic Southern dish a hearty meal that will have your family asking for seconds.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs (680 g) ground beef, 80/20
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups (480 ml) beef broth

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme

Seasoning Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Blend 1 ½ pounds ground beef with finely chopped small onion, minced garlic, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and spice powders. Gently shape the mixture into 4 even hamburger steaks.
  2. Warm 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet at medium-high heat (375°F). Cook hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side until deep golden brown. Transfer steaks to a separate plate.
  3. Reduce heat to medium and melt 2 tablespoons butter in the same skillet. Add thinly sliced large onion and sauté for 5 minutes until softened and translucent.
  4. Introduce 8 ounces sliced mushrooms to the onions. Cook an additional 5 minutes until mushrooms release their moisture and turn golden.
  5. Dust 2 tablespoons flour over the onion-mushroom mixture. Stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
  6. Slowly pour 2 cups beef broth into the skillet, whisking continuously. Scrape up all browned bits from the pan’s bottom.
  7. Add 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and ½ teaspoon dried thyme. Allow sauce to simmer and thicken for 3-4 minutes.
  8. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy generously over each patty. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Serve immediately with mashed potatoes, spooning extra gravy over the steaks.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef (80/20) for the best flavor and texture without being too greasy.
  • Mix ingredients gently when forming patties to keep the meat tender and prevent tough hamburger steaks.
  • Let patties rest at room temperature for 15 minutes before cooking to ensure even browning and consistent cooking.
  • For a gluten-free version, replace wheat flour with cornstarch or alternative flour when making the gravy.
