Description

Jamaican Beef Patties deliver a spicy Caribbean punch straight to your dinner plate. Crispy golden pastry packed with seasoned ground beef creates a perfect handheld meal that’ll transport your taste buds to Jamaica’s streets.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Proteins:

  • 1 pound ground beef

Spices and Seasonings:

  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté 1 finely chopped small onion and 2 minced garlic cloves until translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add 1 pound ground beef to the skillet. Break meat apart with a spoon and cook until completely browned, around 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon each of thyme, paprika, allspice, and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper into the meat. Season with salt and pepper. Stir thoroughly and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Pour ½ cup beef broth into the skillet. Stir in 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs and simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  5. Remove the meat mixture from heat and let it cool completely at room temperature.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Dust your work surface with flour and unroll the refrigerated pie crusts.
  7. Use a 5-inch round cutter to cut perfect circles from the pie crusts. This ensures uniform patty sizes.
  8. Spoon 2 tablespoons of cooled beef mixture into the center of each pastry circle.
  9. Fold the pastry over to create a half-moon shape. Press edges firmly with a fork to create a tight seal.
  10. Arrange patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops generously with 1 beaten egg.
  11. Bake in the 400°F oven for 20-25 minutes until the patties turn a rich golden brown.

Notes

  • Add extra cayenne or hot sauce if wanting more heat, but start small to control spice level.
  • Freeze uncooked patties for up to two weeks, wrapping tightly in plastic before sealing in freezer bag.
  • Use a fork with decorative tines when crimping edges to create a traditional sealed look and prevent filling leakage.
  • Choose ground beef with 80/20 fat content for best flavor and moisture in the meat filling.
