Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Proteins:
- 1 pound ground beef
Spices and Seasonings:
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
Supporting Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- ½ cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
- 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté 1 finely chopped small onion and 2 minced garlic cloves until translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
- Add 1 pound ground beef to the skillet. Break meat apart with a spoon and cook until completely browned, around 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle 1 teaspoon each of thyme, paprika, allspice, and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper into the meat. Season with salt and pepper. Stir thoroughly and cook for an additional minute.
- Pour ½ cup beef broth into the skillet. Stir in 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs and simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove the meat mixture from heat and let it cool completely at room temperature.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F. Dust your work surface with flour and unroll the refrigerated pie crusts.
- Use a 5-inch round cutter to cut perfect circles from the pie crusts. This ensures uniform patty sizes.
- Spoon 2 tablespoons of cooled beef mixture into the center of each pastry circle.
- Fold the pastry over to create a half-moon shape. Press edges firmly with a fork to create a tight seal.
- Arrange patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops generously with 1 beaten egg.
- Bake in the 400°F oven for 20-25 minutes until the patties turn a rich golden brown.
Notes
- Add extra cayenne or hot sauce if wanting more heat, but start small to control spice level.
- Freeze uncooked patties for up to two weeks, wrapping tightly in plastic before sealing in freezer bag.
- Use a fork with decorative tines when crimping edges to create a traditional sealed look and prevent filling leakage.
- Choose ground beef with 80/20 fat content for best flavor and moisture in the meat filling.
