Description

Garlic shrimp gratin brings together succulent seafood and a luxurious cheese sauce that melts right into golden, crispy breadcrumbs. Your dinner guests will be transported to a Mediterranean coastal kitchen with this simple yet elegant dish that comes together in minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein:

  • 1 pound shrimp

Dairy and Cheese:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

Seasonings and Supporting Ingredients:

  • 4 cloves garlic
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon white wine
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Warm your oven to 400F. Coat a baking dish with a thin layer of butter so your shrimp won’t stick.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat. Drop in 4 minced garlic cloves and let them sizzle for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add 1 pound shrimp to the skillet. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, and ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes over them. Cook each side for 1-2 minutes until they just turn pink.
  4. Pour 1 tablespoon white wine into the pan and stir. Transfer the shrimp to your prepared baking dish in a single layer.
  5. Using the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Whisk in 1 tablespoon flour to create a smooth base for your sauce.
  6. Slowly stream ½ cup heavy cream and ¼ cup milk into the skillet, whisking constantly to prevent any lumps from forming.
  7. Stir in ¼ cup grated parmesan, ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg. Let the sauce simmer for 2-3 minutes until it thickens nicely.
  8. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over your shrimp in the baking dish.
  9. Mix ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon melted butter until they’re completely coated.
  10. Sprinkle ½ cup shredded mozzarella, ¼ cup parmesan, and the buttery breadcrumbs across the top of the dish.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes at 400F until the surface turns golden and bubbles form around the edges.
  12. For an extra crispy top, switch your oven to broil and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  13. Scatter 1 teaspoon chopped parsley over the gratin. Serve immediately with crusty bread or over rice.

Notes

  • Ensure shrimp are fresh and deveined for the best flavor and texture.
  • Use room temperature ingredients to help create a smoother, more even sauce.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with cornstarch or almond flour.
  • Swap heavy cream with half-and-half or milk to reduce calories without losing creamy richness.
